The dos and don’ts of travelling abroad: Backpacking in New Zealand

Backpacking in New Zealand

So you’ve decided to travel to New Zealand for a backpacking experience of a lifetime? Great!

New Zealand really is the adventure capital of the world. It’s a popular place among backpackers and those with round the world tickets, as tourism in New Zealand really caters to the budget and backpacker minded.

NZ loves international travellers, so here are a few tips that will help you get the most out of your trip:

Personal:

  • Smile! Kiwis are generally a friendly bunch and appreciate good manners and a great attitude.
  • Help support the locals: Buy local products.
  • Take a range of clothing. New Zealand is renowned for its temperature change and really can have four seasons in one day. Oh…and if you plan on visiting in summer, take sandals for the West Coast beaches (black sand will burn your feet), and loads of sun block!
  • Take an eco-bottle or reusable water bottle. The water is safe to drink so you can refill your bottle rather than adding to the overload of plastic in the environment.
  • Don’t litter! Take your rubbish with you or use the bins provided. Oh…and please recycle!
  • Look for non smoking signs. Many public places in New Zealand are now smoke free zones. Continue reading The dos and don’ts of travelling abroad: Backpacking in New Zealand

Bruce Robson (82), from Benton tests the DriveLAB
The DriveLAB mobile laboratory is tested by 82-year-old Bruce Robson

A team at Newcastle University is developing new technology aimed at helping older drivers stay on the road.

Many give up because their reaction times have slowed down – but this means they become more isolated and inactive.

One of the Intelligent Transport team’s developments is a “Granny-Nav” which identifies the safest route, such as avoiding right turns.

The Age UK charity said “ability not age” should determine how safe someone is on the road.

Texting pilot forgets to lower landing gear

Jetstar pilot texting150 metres off the ground, you’re ready to land but oops, no landing gear! This is the scenario that recently took place when two of Jetstar‘s pilots forgot to lower the gear and had to abort a landing in Singapore.

Apparently the captain (who had over 13,000 hours flying experience) became distracted by his bleeping phone somewhere between 2500 and 2000 feet and was trying to turn it off.

Jetstar’s 220-seat Airbus A320 issues began when the co-pilot switched off the autopilot to make preparations to land.

The captain’s mobile phone started beeping with incoming text messages, distracting the pilot and then seemingly rendering him deaf to the co-pilot’s requests. Continue reading Texting pilot forgets to lower landing gear

Transfercar Steps In As Virgin Cuts Gold Coast to Townsville Flights

Virgin AustraliaVirgin Australia has announced that it will be cutting direct flights between the Gold Coast and Townsville, with its main focus now being on high demand routes such as Melbourne and Sydney.

The Gold Coast to Townsville service has been under review for some time and revenue loss meant the flights had to be pulled, according to GoldCoast.com.au.

Virgin will now be looking at appointing two larger aircrafts that will have the capacity to carry a larger quantity of passengers from the Gold Coast to Sydney and Melbourne.

This could be a big blow to the rapidly developing mining hub in Townsville and surrounding areas, with a potential loss of business and opportunities for both cities and their economies.

Considered as a fly-in, fly-out destination, Townsville will feel the negative impact from anyone that was considering working in the area now the convenience of the direct flights between Townsville and the Coast will cease.

All is not lost though. Transfercar has agents relocating their vehicles to and from Townsville on a regular basis. This means our free to drive rental cars and campervans will come to good use to the working men and women who need access to the area.
