Adelaide is known as Australia’s most liveable city, and because of that, it is also an easy one for travelers to visit and get to know better. It doesn’t take much for a visitor to get around, especially since it is also known as the 20 minute city. In other words: It’s not an overwhelming place to travel like Sydney might be with its traffic and far-reaching suburbs and attractions.
When you arrive after catching a budget flight, here are some of the things to do in Adelaide:
Adelaide Zoo
The Adelaide Zoo is a top attraction especially because of the giant pandas that call it their home. In fact, you can take a whistle stop tour when crossing the country on the Indian Pacific train just to see the pandas. The Adelaide Zoo is the oldest zoo in Australia, right behind the Melbourne Zoo.
Elder Park
When the weather is nice, hanging around at Elder Park for an afternoon is a good idea. Elder Park is located right near Torrens Lake, and it is here that you can rent a paddleboat for a bit of fun. For some free fun, there are walking paths and plenty of space for laying out a picnic blanket.
Adelaide Botanic Garden
Like Elder Park, the Adelaide Botanic Garden is a picturesque, serene and green area to hang out at on a sunny day. The Adelaide Botanic Garden covers 125 acres of land and features the Palm House, the Rose Garden and the Bicentennial Conservatory.
Gouger Street
Gourger is a strip that leads into Adelaide’s Chinatown and is just near the Central Markets. Being lined with restaurants and shops adds more to the liveliness of the area. Hang out at Gouger Street to get your fill of Asian, French and Argentian cuisine.
National Wine Centre of Australia
The National Wine Centre of Australia is more of an educational experience than a wine-tasting outting. It is here that you can take a tour of the wine journey, enjoy a few Australian wines and top it off with good food. The wine centre doubles as a banquet and functions location.
South Australian Museum
The South Australian Museum is known for having extensive and quality exhibits. Exhibits include information on both local and world history with galleries and artifacts. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm and admission is free.
Adelaide Central Market
The Adelaide Central Market is a combination of 80 stalls in one area boasting quality, fresh food. The market is open from Tuesday to Saturday and makes for a great short stop or a long afternoon out. Those riding on the Indian Pacific can take advantage of a whistle stop tour to explore.
Adelaide Gaol
The Adelaide Gaol is one of the oldest buildings in Adelaide and has since been converted to a museum. The building dates back to 1841, and, given its age and history, is now home to many paranormal and ghost tours.
