Transfercar have a number of Australian companies needing their vehicles relocated across the Bass Strait between Hobart, Melbourne and then further on to other cities such as Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane. As we often get questions as to prices and ferry times etc, we thought it would be a good subject to write about.
The Bass Strait is approximately 240 km wide at its narrowest point and generally around 50 metres deep, containing over 50 islands, with King Island and Flinders Island home to a number of residents.
The waters around Tasmania are known to be home to powerful, wild, stormy waves due to its limited depth and the strong currents that run between the Antarctic-driven southeast portions of the Indian Ocean and the Tasman Sea’s Pacific Ocean. The Strait claimed many ships during the 19th century with shipwrecks on the Tasmanian and Victorian coastlines numbering in the hundreds. Not to be afraid though as the introduction of more sturdier, steel vessels and numerous lighthouses have lowered the number of incidences dramatically.
Spirit of Tasmania have two domestic passenger vehicle ferries that cross the Bass Strait nightly and some days during peak periods.
Accommodation options for both the vessels range from Deluxe Cabins for passengers who like to travel in style to Ocean Recliners for the budget conscious.
There are a number of options to chose from and prices vary depending on the season and if you are taking a vehicle or extra items such as luggage, animals and a bicycle etc.
